The Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon Camper with Grey Furniture / Dark Grey Edging and Grey Upholstery Model History
In July 1986 the new updated Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon camper was introduced. Whilst maintaining a similar layout to the previous version of the Vanagon Camper the furniture was now in a more modern light grey with dark grey edge trim. The upholstery was in matching grey materials. Engine specifications and external colour options changed as well.

At the introduction of the 1987 model year Vanagon Camper with the grey interior there were 2 versions available 1) The Camper and 2) The Camper GL. The base Camper had a poptop roof (with skylight), rear seat/bed, a rear facing seat behind the driver, clothes locker, storage cabinets. folding side table and removable fridge.
The Camper GL was the full on camper with stove, sink and fridge etc. From now on this model history refers only to the Camper GL model.
1) Combination cupboard 87 cm wide x 45 cm deep on the left behind the drivers seat with sink, two flame LP gas cooker with splash plate. The splash plate folds down and can be used to drain dishes after washing. Also the unit has a cutlery draw, a large cupboard for tableware and the fridge.
2) Cupboard unit with 10.5 US Gallon (40 litre) integrated freshwater tank.
3) Wardrobe (with mirror on inside of door) and storage unit with 3 shelves over the engine bay.
4) Roof locker below roof bed.
5) Cushion 120 cm wide over the engine bay.
6) 3/4 width rock n roll bed for 2 persons (bed is 188 cm x 120 cm when folded out) with bedding storage area under seat.
7) Rear table on swinging arm (80 cm x 40 cm) with light grey surface finish and dark grey edging trim.
8) Front table on swinging arm (60 cm x 40 cm) with light grey surface finish and dark grey edging trim.
1987 - 1991 Westfalia Vanagon Camper GL Pop Top Interior Photos
The 1987 model year Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon Camper had light grey furniture and grey velour upholstery.
The rear floor was a hard wearing grey lino type material and this was covered by a removable square grey carpet with a non slip rubber backing.
The front carpet in the cab was grey.
7) 1987 - 1991 Volkswagen Westfalia Vanagon Camper GL Door Trim Specification
Door trims and interior panels were grey vinyl with a matching material padded insert. There was a storage pocket on the drivers side door panel.
8) 1987 - 1991 Westfalia Vanagon Camper GL Standard Model Specification
Insulated on all inner bodywork in the living area with 25 mm thick mineral fibre plates. Floor area has a plywood sheet with PVC covering. Over the engine bay there is an insulating noise absorbing mat. The side walls and roof panels are made grey imitation leather. In some panels there is a padding of matching grey material.
The 1987 - 1991 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper had opening sliding windows on the sliding door and above the kitchen unit.
Curtains all round including drivers cabin area. The curtains for the sliding door and front windscreen were clipped on when required.
110v Volt external hook up with internal duplex outlet socket and safety trip cut out.
45 litre (1.5 cu. ft.) fridge working from 12v, 110v AC or LP gas.
One redesigned 12 volt transistor light over kitchen unit.
40 Litre (10.5 US gallon) Freshwater tank with electric pump and external hook up.
Swivelling passenger and drivers bucket seats with armrests with frame type headrests.
External underbody LPG tank (3 US Gallon).
Diode control display system on the kitchen unit showing fresh water tank level, battery charge level and indicator when fridge is running on gas.
Power steering with smaller steering wheel (safety steering wheel with energy absorbing and collapsible column).
Speedometer with resettable mileage trip.
Tachometer (Rev Counter).

Padded dashboard with additional convenience tray.

External water hook up for city water (this means to connect mains water supply direct to van).
Opening front quarter light windows in driver and passenger door.

Initially the 1987 Vanagon Camper GL had the same chrome bumpers front/rear, with impact strip as earlier models. By mid 1987 the bumpers had been changed to updated black aero styled bumpers with front spoiler and door side planks (on driver and passenger doors).
Initially the 1987 Vanagon Camper GL had no ventilation in the rear side windows but from 1988 each window had a black plastic vent.
The ride height was lowered by one and a half inches in 1988 for all Vanagon GL Campers.
Up until 1988 the Vanagon Camper GL had chrome window trim inserts but from from 1989 onwards the chrome was replaced with black inserts.
